I still remember finding an old photograph of my father's parents on their wedding day. It stopped me in my tracks.

In recent years I have lost my mum, my dad and my sister. What remains are memories — fragile, precious, and deeply personal. Those photographs, letters and stories now mean more than ever.

And when I look at their faces, I often wonder what they would make of the digital world we live in today.

The second photograph is my mother's seventieth. Look closely and you will see that every person in it is wearing the same portrait, taken of her in 1941, printed on a t-shirt. One generation carrying the image of another.

Between those two pictures, a family grew. Four people in a photographer's studio became a room full. That is what these things are for.
